LEGO Avatar The Last Airbender

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

On the latest installment of Brickology, LegoLee329 journeys deep in the universe of the beloved cartoon Avatar The Last Airbender and explores its short-lived LEGO theme.

Good morning, good afternoon and goodevening whenever, wherever it is for you, thank you so much making me a partof your day. My name is Lei. Parmin might know me as Legole or Legolethreeto. Nine from facebook, instagram twitter, Youtube, Patreonyou name it. Iam all over the Internet, and this is the brick Ology podcast the study ofsmall plastic bricks. How are you doing today? I really hope you are doing well, and this is going to be an interesting episode of Brick Ology. For manyreasons, it's episode, eighteen ore, more than halfway done with season toalready of brickology, which is crazy in today the day that I'm recordingthis episode, I just hit three tousand streams on spotify. Thank you all so somuch for the unwavering support of this podcast. It has been an awesomeexperience and I've only been doing this for like less than half a year, but I really feel like this. PODCAST is just catching on. I'm really happy withthe result. So far now, if you've been falling brick allgy recently, you knowthat I alternate each week between n being a licensed lego theme and anunlicensed theme. So last week's episode about Ninjago Tats from theyear tales and twelve was an onlicensed original lego theme, which means t thisweek is a licensed theme. But before we talk about this week's theme, just acouple of random little tidbits here, this is going to be a very busy week. For me, I am traveling and I will not be in my normal locations when Inormally would record brickology, so one this episode is probably going tobe a bit shorter than most episodes of brickology one, because the theme I'mtalking about is a lot smaller than your typical lego theme, but also Ijust don't have as much time so I picked a theme that is smallers. Thisepisode won't be Super Long. In fact, I anticipate this probably be theshortest episode of brick. Ology ever also, I'm recording this episode awayin advance. Currently today, where I'm not, it is Sunday I normally postbrickology on Friday, so I just poste myn in Joge episode for what I'mrecording right now just two days ago, and hopefully I will be posting thisepisode still on Friday, even though I'm traveling, I should have goodenough Internet access to still be able and actually post this episode ofbrickology at the normal time or might just had to schedule it on sounder, whatever to post it at the normal time. But if, for some reason, this episodegoes up on like Wednesday or Thursday or late, or something now that, becauseI'm travelling, that's the reason why it might not get poste at the righttime, but fingers crossed everything goes according to plan. So a couple ofsmall announcements out of the way. Let's talk about the theme of this weekfor Bricology and since this episode is Plann to be shorter, I want to discussa shorter live thene, like I already said, and with the release of this showon Netflix very recently, just a few weeks ago, I figured it was the perfecttime to discuss Lego sets based off the Nickelodeon show Avatar the last airbender. Now, especially if you're a younger leg, a fan, you might bescratching your head, a little bit mean like wait. A second lead Lek, O mad setspaced off Havitar, the last Eir Bender and yes, they did make sets, and it isplural sets, but they only made two just two avage Hare. The last ar bintersets were ever made and we will discuss those in pretty lengthy detailthroughout this episode of Brickology, but, like I normally like to do on thispodcast Tis kind of explain some of the history of the show and then thehistory of the Lego theme so Avatar to last air bender. What is the show? Ithink you know if you've seen this show. You know the quote: onquote theme songis not really a theme song wit, like a theme narration, where guitar is likewhat or Earth Fire Air. These are the four elements and only one person canbend all four elements and bring peace to the world. That was a horriblyAbridge version of the INTRO, but I think you guys know what I'm talkingabout. If you have seen the program so...

Avatar Lest Arabiner is a cartoon, it'svery animas actually used to think it was an enime when I was younger, butit's made by Americans, it's on Nickelodeon, but heavily inspired byanname and it premiered on Nickelodeon, Tho thousand and five. It ran threeseasons, not because it was cancelled, short or anything. They literally justplanned. The show to have a three season run. Each season was a differentbook so book one was water book to was Earth Book three was fire and they hadtwenty episodes each. It tills one cohesive story of the Avatar. Theavatar is a little kid named Ang, who is the last Air Bendor? Obviously, because that's in the name of the title and Essentially Ang story is that he'san Ara bendor he's the Iratar. He learns he's the Aritar when he's liketwelve years old, he runs away from his responsibilities and gets caught in astorm and freezes himself in Eces to protect him and his flying Bison, APAand he's frozen in ice for one hundred years, and during that one hundred yearspan were Ang, was frozen. The fire nation attacked and everything in theworld just went the chaos, because the Avatar wasn't there, but then Guataraand Saka or other main leads the show find Ang in the ice, and they believethat Ang, even though he's just a twelve year old kid has a lot to learn, can bring balance to the world. Yet again, a Varya bridge versionsummarizing the plot of this show, but it's an absolutely fantastic show. We'll talk more about that throughout today's episode. But let's kind offocus in on the really strange history of Lego, Avatar last Ara, been duringkind of how this theme came to be the year is two thousand and six. I am nineyears old at this time and I was very obsessed with Nickelodeond we'll talkabout that throughout today's episode and in two thousand and six Lego andNickelodeon made a deal to make some sets based off their shows. Now.NICKELODEON has a ton of ridiculously popular cartoons. Obviously, in the syou had cartoons like rug rets, which were humongous, they were' going tomake sense baced off those, because those shows at that point were nolonger being produced, but there are so many shows at the time in two thousandand six that could have lenne themselves very well to Leko set a fewthat come to mine, are Jimmy Neutron, boy, genius, the fairly odd parents andthen Danny Phantom, the latter, Dany Phantom, I think, really could havemade some cool Lego sets, there's just a few that I think could have made goodLego sets, but they decided to only make sets based off two different nickcartoons. Now the first one is ridiculously obvious, even if you'recompletely oblivious to any of this, I think we can all just assume whatcartoon they would make into Lego set say it with me in three two onespongebob square pants I mean spongebob is pretty much the biggest cartoon evermade. It's still running today, it's ridiculously popular, it's become evenmore popular online. Now US simply because of means and such spongebob ishuge, and I think anybody in the world could have guessed that Lego andspongebub would pair up at some point in time, and I was stoped to getspongebob sets when they first came out. Two thousand, and six specifically islike the peak of my spongebob obsession. My Ninth Birthday Party, I was goingthrough some old family photos a couple weeks ago and sell some photos of myninth birthday party. My freaking birthday cake was shape. Like Spongebob,I was wearing a Tshirt with Patrick Star, getting his butt caught on afishing hook, kind of a funny tshirt like I was head over heels obsessedwith spongebob at this point in time I own, I think, the first four or fiveseasons on DVD I've seen all of the episodes up to a certain point Ihaven't kept up with the newer runs of the show, but all the classic oldsponder episodes I have seen spongebob was a humogous part of my childhood atthe time, and I will definitely be talking about Lego Spongebob at somepoint in the future, probably when the...

...new spongebot movie comes out, but thatdid get delayed due to the pandemic. So I was obsessed with spongebob. Iabsolutely love Spongebob and I remember going to toys Ar Rust, and Iyou know at this point in time. Like I said I was nine years old, the Youtubewasn't nearly as big. I didn't follow, Lego leaks or anything. So I had noclue. LEKO SPONGEBOB was even going to come out a remember going to toys,Awoth my dad and being absolutely blown away that they had leco spongebob setsand I bought the adventures in Bikini bottom set. The first time I ever sawit in stores now. The second show the other nick cartoon they decided to makesets based off is, of course, Avatar the last Air Bendor and at the time Iwas kind of confused why they chose this one to make this theme over things, like I said, Dani Phantom, fairly odd parents or Jimmy Newstron. Now thesource material, I think actually of all knick cartoons, probably lendsitself the best to toys, because the show you know is very action, oriented, there's lots of cool vehicles and temple designs and things of that sort.It definitely lends itself well to playability and to Lego models andother toys in general. But to me at the time I just wasn't quite as obsessedwith Avatar. I also didn't think it was nearly as popular among kids, my age atthe time. People would always talk about spongerob. You always saw peoplewith spongebob shirts and maybe even Jimmy Neutron or something but Avaturat the time I didn't think, was super popular and when I watch the showduring its original run, first stuff, Avatar is a very story. Driven showpretty much. Every episode has some significance to an overarcing plot, andthat really wasn't my thing, because I would you know randomly turn on epsodeof Spongebob and spongerob is Super Epitic, so you can watch any episode ofsponejob whenever you want, but with Avatar. It was so storydriven that if Imiss an episode, I just like didn't know what was going on and gotcompletely lost with the show, so I kind of gave up on Avatar a little.Sadly, when I was this age, so my interest in this theme, especiallycompared to Spongebob, was pretty minimal and, like I said they only madetwo Avatar sets. They made three spongebob sets the original threespongerob sets. Were the crusty crab ad ventures, a bikini bottom that I bothgot and then I sat called Buildabob. That was like a brick built spongebob, which I did not get, but I initially skipped the Avatar set when they cameout at the time, and I saw them at toys arest. I remember looking at these setsand just being like not not going to get these. I don't care enough aboutthis show and I'm going to talk about later on how I have come around onHavitar, thankfully, but at the time of release. I skipped on this, and all ofthis is ultimately leading to me explaining an experiment that Lego didat this time. Lego essentially made two waves. These two waves of these setsit's one way to each theme to test the waters of nick tune based themes andthey martored how the set sold. They were O pretty limited release. I thinkmaybe only at toys, arrust or something it was like fairly difficult to getthese sets and which everyone sold better. They would make into a longerlived lego theme and then the other one. The one that didn't sell as well was onthe cutting room floor and you know Juz died after a very small short wave and,of course, spongebob on no disrespect to avatar whatsoever. You cand, evenDeba Avatar, is a much better show than spongebub, but it was never going tobeat. Spongebob Avatar has never been as popular sponger Bob, because nothingpretty much in the world of cartoons is as popular as spongebob and thespongebub theme. It had some kind of weird ups and downs, but ultimately itlasted five years and produced fourteen sets, and I will talk about that themein the future of Bicology, but the Avatar te last air bender theme isdiscontinued. After only one wave and two total set and like I said thesesets were made in a very limited run and they have become reticulouslyexpensive online. I mean getting them...

...even built as hundred of dollars. Ifyou want these sets new sealed be prepared to spend three to five hundreddollars because wow the sets are ridiculously expensive online and we'lltalk about the sets in a minute. But I do kind of want to talk about myexperience with Avatar the last air bender here. Like IAS mentioned, Ididn't love the show. Then it's initial run. I was about eight to ten years old.Wasn't my favorite show kind of gave up on it. You know I'd Watche, the episodethat they premiered like before spongebob or something but ultimatelywasn't a huge fan. However, I rediscovered the show when I got a bitolder the reason I rediscovered the Showis, because nickelodeon announcedthe legend o Cora, which is a sequel show and that starked my interest inthe abatar world. So I revisited Avatar the last air bender. I rewatched theentire thing we lach the APSID a already seen and then watch the entireseries all at once when I was a the age fifteen and I absolutely fell in lovewith it. My little kid mindset was gone and now I was obsessed. I fell in lovewith this world. It's an absolutely beautiful piece of storytelling andshows that, like kids, cartoons can be way more than just cartoons andactually tell pretty awesome story. So I became a huge fan: Ol the last ArabBender and I definitely started a reminisc ind Thas Lego set and gotpretty upset that Leko didn't continue the theme and I wish they had made more, and I wish that I had gotten those sets which I do have one set well talk aboutjust a minute, so that's my experiece of the Avatar I beginn to Rewatch it onNetflix. Now I own the first season on DVD but nickelodeon removed all theepisodes that used to be on Nickelodeon's website. You could watchthem for free, but they have since removed all the episodes from therthere. So I haven't had any way of streaming it for free for, like five orsix years now, but now it's on Netflix, I'm well into season to I'll, probablybine the rest of the season and finish it within the next couple of weeks, andnow it's finally time to talk about the Avatar, the last Ar Bender Lego setsokay yea. Let's talk about the Lego Avatar, the last air bender sets likeI've already mentioned a number of times. Only two sets wer ever made.Making it one of the shortest lived lego themes of all time, and that'sjust a fact and let's jump into the set, and since I have you know a little bitmore time, we will talk about these sets in pretty extensive detail. Thefirst or the two sets the smaller of the two is the air temple it retailedfor thirty dollars in the United States, atd its time of release in two thousandand six, and it had exactly four hundred pieces. That's a fantasticprice per piece and the mini figures included with this set here. One ofcourse, is Ang with his glider. Now the ingfigure I mean, not, surprisingly, the an figure the abatar himself comes in both of the Lego. Avatar sets, soang wasn't exclusive, but the glider piece was used, a vinyl element sinilarto things you might see for like a sale or something it use a vinyl element forhis glider, but for some reason the staff piece they use, which I believewas the jousting piece from like kingdom set- was black instead of Brown. It's very clearly brown in the TV show and the printing on the vityl piece forthe wing parts is also Brown, so not really sure why the staff piece wasblack. It's just kind of a weird and accuracy. Ann also included a cleardish, piece torpecent him Air Benning, which was you know, a pretty cool andfun little idea. Other many figures on this set here. Of course, we got Saka, who was completely exclusive to this set well talk about his sister Qataraand the next set. Now all of his details were prints instead of pieces. So what I mean by this is that his hair Saka has a very interesting hairpiecethat doesn't really lend itself super well to Lego, so they printed his hairon a bald minifigure head. So when you looked at his face, sord of Haing, likea double sided, face like a lot of...

...legomany figures. Do he just has hislike weird, Hair Pony tail kind of thing printed on the back of his head?It looks kind of weird. Admittedly, it doesn't look great and over all thesefigures look a little strange. They went for a cartooni style, obviously, because they're based off a cartoon now, I think the eyes look pretty good andit actually it works out fairly well, but it's not nearly as bad as somethinglike the you know: cartoonies tyle figures they made for the Klong wards, but they still do look a little bit off and I kind of wish you know we couldsee what Avatar figures would look like with a more normal style of Lego detailadditionally for Saka his iconic boomerang weapon was printed on theback of his torso and there was no actual piece for it. That is definitelya disappointment. The rest of the figures in this set you got the firenatone soldiers, which use some nights, kingdom, helmet and armor pieces. Thesefigures came in both sets. They had some cool prints. They are verythreatening. I, like the whole design of the fire nation in the show, so verycool figures, and also with this set, you got momo the flying. Leamer Momawas just one little revery piece with some printing completely exclusive tothis set. However, very sadly, Lego never made an OPA figure. Obviously, ato need to be some kind of big FIG or brick built contraption, but it's kindof sad that Lego never made OPA. That is pretty depressing at which we gotnthe iconic flying Bison from the show. Now, let's talk about the builds ofthis set, so we'll talk about the side builds first ut kind of get them out ofthe way you got a catapult for Saca that can shoot sludge which are justtranspparent green cylinders at the fire nation and the fire nation wasequicked with their quote unquote tank now the tank was a small wheel, buildthat had a disk launcher in the middle. You couldn't really like fit manyfigures in the side t it didn't have an inteeor or anything, which is why Ithrew up the air quote: It's not really a tank. It's not accurate to the tankscene in the show whatsoever, although those fire nation tanks from the showWuld letten themselves very well to a cool like I said, I'd love to see amock of that at some point, but moving on to the main build of the set whichis the Air Temple. This is kind of a weird build. It's a strange bill. That's not entirely accurate to the show it immittately kind of looks likehogboard castle. It use a very similar color scheme where the walls andeverything were Tan and en the roof is kind of a sandy green. The roof had anice kind of like tilely printed piece on it, which was very cool, but it kindof looked like hog warts castle, but ultimately it's very unclear what airtemple this is now the scene of the set is clearly based off season. Oneepisode seventeen which occurs at the northern Air Temple. That's when thefire nation attacks, N Orthernear temple with their tanks and they throwsludge on them. They use big weapons and then the door for the air temple inthis set. It's clearly based off the northern Air Temple as well, where ithad a play feature where you could open up by pretending to blow on it like inthe show Ang opens the door using air bending and they had kind of a featurewith some sworly looking stickers to represent that in this set. However, the build color scheme that I've already mentioned in the design fromthe exterior more so resembles that of the southern Air Temple. So it'sclearly based offie scene as e northern Air Temple, but it looks a little bitmore like the Southern Air Temple, but ultimately it doesn't really look likeany specific air templ, its more so an amalgamation of the two air templesreally weird. I can't really think of any LEGOSET. Quite like this one. Now Iam lucky enough to say that I do own. This set is the only one of the twothat I got. I actually got this set a couple years after it was released. Itwas available at a hobby store at a mall. That's completely. It's beenclosed for like over a decade now, and...

I remember to sing at that hobby storeand it was on a really good sale. I think I paid like fifteendolars to getthis set at the time and it's a cool set and I definitely have the minifigures lying somewhere in my collection. But of course, like Imentioned all the time, Oth onbricology with ALD Lego sets. It's destroyed,it's detroyed in my collection. I really wish I had this set still built, because this thing is worth a lot of money these days, and this set was alsovoted on by my fans on Instagram as the best set from Lego Avatar, the lastArbin dirided a poll this one one with about sixty percent of the votes andhonestly I was pretty shocked because I think the next set is a much moreaccurate representation of what we see in the show, and it's just bigger, Ikind of thought the next set would win. So I was pleasantly surprised to seethat this set was voted on as the best set from Lego. Avatar. Definitely asurprising outcome to that poll for sure it's a good set. Honestly, I thinkthe bigger set might be a little bit better, even though I don't own it, butlet's talk about that set now and you guys can make your own decisions foryourself. So the one other avatare, the last Ar Bunear Lego, set and kind ofthe flagship set of the way Pon intended is the fire nationship. Thisset was fifty dlars with seven hundred and twenty two pieces. That is anamazing price for peace and the Mani figures included whith. This set were,of course, ank exact same figure as the last one, but no glider was includedfor him here. You also got Catara, who was completely exclusive to the set shehad her like little like hair. I don't even know what to call it like. She haslike two Strans of hair that kind of go over her eyes. Those were printed ontoher face, however. They use the very basic pony, Tal harrapiece, that isn'tseen in Lego, saits too much anymore as her hairpiece. The hair peace wasdefinitely not. The best choice does not really look like Guitara's hairfrom the show and speaking of hair. We have another weird example of printedhair with the next minifigure, which is Prince Zuco. Now this figure is alsoexclusive to the set and print Zuco in the show, at least in the first seasonkind of iconically. Has this pony tail type design with the rest of his headshaved now Lego does have a piece that I think would really work for thisfigure in the future that they made for Ala Sacura from the star war sets thatkind of goes into the Stud on top of the manifigures head, but that was afew later years later down the line. That piece did not exist at the time ofthis figure coming out. So we're stuck with this Prin Zuco figure where hisfront faceprint looks really good. The SCAR, his iconic scar, looks reallycool, but from the back we just have his very odd looking hair, it's hisponny tail. It's printed on the back, it's you know very too dimensional, andI really don't think it looks all that great. It honestly might even lookworse than Saka's, because Prince Zuco's Ponnytallors, so iconic for thecharacter at this time, in the show just seeing it like. This is a bitstrange to me. You also got a few firedation soldiers included with thisset as well. Now we can talk about the build of this set. You get a big grayfire nationship. You see these things throughout Avatar, pretty much theentire run of the show, but explicitly in the first book about water. You seea lot of fire nation ships and it's a big grayship using a lot of greatpieces lot of people, don't love big gray, things like the most recentsuperstart destroy or just thats. Sorry, most recent starto store oucs Startostoryor sat everyone's like it's ugly and gray. I don't know what peoplealways hate on big gray things it's very militaristic, looking and asmallership could deploy from the back of this one, which is a very accuratedetail of the show. Not Everything, of course, is very scaled down. The smallship is really really small, but it is cool that they were able to incorporatethat play feature into this set and...

...speaking of play, features. Sections ofthis ship could be removed to access the interior. Thare was a prison cellthere's a various amounts of little rooms with like shrines and things forZo could have sit in front of, and you also got a coal engine room which isalso pretty cool, and the top deck had a catapult that could launch two by twoDark Red Lego bricks, and I think it's very interesting that this catapil justliterally launches like a classic like a brick. It's kind of a funny thing tolodge from a catapult and finally for play, features the front rap, a chosesone of those big pieces that we see a a lot of star war sets for like Jeti Starfighters and such the front rap could fold down to deploy the finationsoldiers, which is a very accurate detail to the show it was actually heldin place by a string piece and it's a very loose attachment. So if you removethe string, it just simply falls down really interesting. You think they'duse like ragedy joints or something, but this is a completely differentmethod of accomplishing that play feature so very, very cool, and Ireally wish I had this set one just to say I had both the Avitar sent. I thinkthe build actually holds up fairly well today. It's definitely a bit blocky, but it's big and Grat. It really resembles the build from or the vehiclefrom, the show. It's a very good design. However, this set is exsanely expensive. It goes for over four hundred dollar sealed on after markets and even out ofbox. It's still a hundred of dollars that I'm just never going to spend onthis Lego set. So I'll probably never get this set in my lifetime, but it's avery, very cool set and that's it that's all. She wrote for Lego, Avatarte last Air Benger, just those two sets and man O man. I really wish they wouldmake more, but there are possibilities for Lego to make more in the future. There is a Lego ideas, project up right now, based off this show a brick builtAPA with some figures. It looks really good and I think, because of the newfound popularity of Awithard, now being on Netflix and kids, you know mygeneration have grown up, who grew up with the show or now old enough to. Youknow want to shout out the big bucks on Avatar products to kind of have anostagic feeling I do think aturn. The last Erry brinner could be a violableproperty for Lego to bring back and go support that Lego ideas project mybuddy just too good, who has like five hundred thousand subscribers. Now heshared it on his account. Hopefully that gets ten thousand supporters andgives us a chance just little glimmer of hope of getting more Legoavatartalast Ar Bunder stuff.
