LEGO Marvel Black Widow

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

To coincide with the release of the film, LegoLee breaks down the small wave of LEGO sets based off Black Widow and explains the rocky history of the movies production and release schedule.

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, whenever wherever you are listening. Thank you so much for making me a part of your day. My name is leeparmy. Might know me as Lego Lee or Lego lead. Three, two, nine, from facebook, instagram, twitter, Youtube, pagtrening, name it, I'm all over the Internet and this is the brick Ology podcast, the study of small plastic bricks. How are you doing today? I sincerely hope you're having an absolutely fantastic day, week, month, year, whatever it is, and welcome back to brick ology. Thank you for joining me for this week's episode of the show. And before I say anything else, there's a pretty big elephant in the room that I need to address, and that is I have an upload an episode in the past two weeks and I honestly think I have a pretty good excuse. But at the same time I don't want to have any excuses with this show because I do care about you and I absolutely love making this show. But I am going to explain myself here now. This season a brick ology and last season a brick ology. I did have like a one week gap at one point between seasons. The besides that I had been hitting every single deadline I set for myself and I was very happy with myself and how this was going. And one of the reason I was able to make so many podcasts consistently because I also do another podcast called are you not, where I review movies and other things in entertainment and pop culture, and I have a third podcast that I do with the Buddy of mine from college called the very manly muppet show, where we talked about the muppets. So basically I have three different PODCASTS and I've been pumping out at least two and sometimes three a week, and the reason I was able to do so is because I was technically unemployed. Now I make some money off of doing this and I was doing some freelance work, so I was making some money, but I was not a full time employee. However, I've been searching frivolously for the past year or so. I mean it's in very difficult trying to find a full time job and I actually quit my full time job this past January and since then I have been searching for a better fit and obviously, in the COVID era, finding work is a little bit more difficult than it used to be, but I finally found it. I finally got a job that I'm super excited about, super qualified for and, verity passionate about, which is super exciting, and I have been focusing on that job the past few weeks. I want to make a good first impression. I want to give all my aplus effort towards that job, and it's great work. I love doing the work, but it is time consuming and when you have a job that's time consuming, it's hard to make your hobby job a priority, which means the podcasts have slowed down here and I haven't been able to record in the past couple of weeks besides one review for the new fast and furious movie, and that is all that I have done in the last two weeks. Now, quick announcement. I'm not going to in this podcast and I think I can commit to this being at least a by weekly show. What I mean by that is every other week there will be a new episode of Brick Ology and I'll probably alternate the other week with my other podcast. Are you not? So they'll be at least one episode of my voice every single week for you to hear and listen to, but brick algy will probably not be a weekly show from now on. Now, if I have a lot of free time, I might be able to pump out an episode weekly. What just to wait and see how that goes with there are no guarantees and if there's a really random two week three week gap, just kind of assume I'm probably busy at work and have other things going on. I sincerely apologize for the lack of brick ology the past couple...

...of weeks because I was really happy with how this season was going and actually this week was supposed to be the last episode of this season, but we still have a few episodes left because I have missed some and I'm shuffling around some of those release dates that I announced on my instagram a few months prior. But don't worry, the show will go on. I will continue to make brick ology episodes for you in the future and there are some great topics coming up here soon, but it's not going to be as consistent as it was before. But this week is going to be a relatively short episode because it's a very, very small lego theme, but it will be easy to fit into my schedule because it's not a very hefty episode and that topic is Lego black widow. I am super excited to talk about another marvel property. It's been a hot minute since my last marvel episode and it's definitely a Lego theme that I need to tap into more. So get excited for today's episode. But of course, before we get started, I need to shamelessly plug myself here real quick. Go like my facebook page, follow me on twitter, follow me on Instagram, subscribe to my Youtube Channel, maybe consider become a patreon supporter and check out those other podcast that I already mentioned, the very Mali muppet show, which is also on instagram. and Are you not also on Instagram as well? And whatever streaming service you are using, please hit me with a follow or subscribe on your respective service. Thank you all for bearing through those announcements. Let's now dive in and talk about Lego black widow. Believe it or not, I've almost done sixty episodes of this show. This is episode fifty eight, to be exact, and somehow, some way, out of the fifty seven episodes prior to this one, only one of them was a marvel topic. And that's very odd because I would say at this point in time, marvels probably my third favorite lego theme. Obviously number one in Star Wars. Number two at this point is probably Harry Potter. I've purchased the more recent lego Harry Potter sets fairly religiously. And then marvel, I would say, is third and I own the majority of Lego Marvel Superhero sets. I usually buy the new sets unless it is seemed like a complete waste to me. So I love Lego Marvel. I have been collecting the theme pretty consistently since the new marvel superheroes inception back in two thousand and twelve. So it's very interesting that for some reason I just haven't reported on Lego Marvel all that much and oddly, on the other end of that spectrum, I've never done an episode about Lego DC superheroes. So I have no idea why. I have no normal explanation for this, but marvel and DC superheroes have been completely ignored by me and I'm making a promise now next season of brick ology I will do at least one episode for both of those respective themes. So look forward to that. And today we're talking about Lego black widow. Now I'm going to talk about each marvel film individually on brick oology. I've decided to kind of change my course from the Black Panther episode. If you listen to that Black Panther episode, I think I released it in like September, maybe late August of two thousand and twenty. I basically upload that episode two honor the legacy of the late Chadwick Boseman, and basically what I did in that episode is I talked about every single Black Panther Lego set, not specifically the ones just from the Black Panther movie, but every set to feature the character of Ta Chala, Aka Black Panther. So that meant Black Panther from Captain Americus civil war or Black Panther from avengers infinity war or even the comic book versions of Black Panther, and I kind of mixed and matched a bunch of different lego Marvel Superhero sub themes in that episode. However, I'm not going to do that from now on. That was a...

...special occasion episode to honor the legacy of that character and, of course, the actor who's so famously betrayed him. In this episode we're only going to be talking about Lego black widow, based off the Black Widows Solo movie. So I'm not going to be talking about any other Lego sets that came with black widow, because there are a bunch of those stretching across a bunch of different themes. This is just stuff from the black widow two thousand and twenty one movie, so it doesn't get too confusing along the way and it's easier for me to organize these episodes. And and before I get started talking about the Lego sets, as is tradition here at Brick Ology, I need to add some context to the film that these sets are based off of, and this is a weird one because black widow has had a fairly tumultuous past year or so. It's very interesting. So I'm excited to talk about kind of the origin of this film first before actually talking about the sets. Now the origin of the character black widow. She first appeared in marvel comics in the year one thousand nine hundred and sixty four, so, or just a few years away from her sixty anniversary. And of course black widow is also known as Natasha Romanov. She is a Russian spy assassin who becomes an avenger eventually in her story and of course all this is alluded to in the films, but we haven't really seen that much of her origin and hopefully the new movie provides some of that. Now, speaking of her appearances in the marvel films, the Marble Cinematic Universe, Aka the mcu, she first appeared eleven years ago in two thousand and tens, iron man too, and of course she's iconically played by the fantastic Scarlett Johansson. In that film. We don't see her in her Russian spy days. We see her as a shield agent who kind of infiltrates stark industries. Tony Stark has an alias of Matt Natalie Rushmore, and it's very interesting in a fun little introduction to her character in that film. But in that movie she is a side character and ever since that movie she has always been a side character. And Look, I'm going to read off all the movies that black widow has appeared in before this new movie. She was an iron man to like I just said, she was, of course, in the original avengers. She was in Captain America, the winter soldier, avengers, age of Ultron, Captain America civil war, avengers, infinity war and avengers end game and despite being in all of those movies and despite being one of the original six members of the avengers, and the only woman member of the original avengers crew at that, she never got a solo movie. Now they're actually were some weird plans for black widows solo films. Even before the mcu existed. I believe Lions Gate was trying to develop one and it never came to fruition. So there had been some talks about a black widow movie, but a Scarlett Johanson black widow movie wasn't really in the pipeline for Marvel. Now, before avengers in game, it was not officially announced that a black widow movie was coming. However, there were so many rumors that we just kind of could assume it was coming, which made the spoiler alert for avengers in game. You even seen the movie. Everyone's been up for over two years, but spoilers for that movie anyways. It made her fate in that movie extremely shocking because, well, she dies in avengers in game and when she died I was like, what the heck? They just killed off her before her solo movie is supposed to come out next year or two years eventually, because obviously it got delayed due to Covid it was very, very odd. So it's very strange. She's finally getting a solo film after her character dies, which of course means that this movie is a Prequel, because thank God they did not resurrect her or anything that would...

...make obviously her sacrifice and in game a lot less meaningful to this movie is a Prequel and there are going to be some origins in this movie, at least based on the trailers of what I have read, but the majority of the film is set between civil war and infinity war on the AMCU timeline and at the recording time of this episode. I am not seeing the movie yet and I am going to see the movie tomorrow. I have tickets to go with a bunch of friends tomorrow night. I am super excited. However, when this episode of Brick oology drops on Friday, I'm dropping it the same day as the movie is being officially released. I will have seen the film and I'm really excited to go see a marvel movie in theaters again. It's been over two years since spider man far from home and I am really excited for that. And speaking of the release date for this movie, like I said, very tumultuous. This actually had probably one of the most rocky roads to any movie ever getting released. This movie was supposed to originally come out in May of two thousand and twenty and was going to be the theatrical kickoff to face four of the marvel sit matic universe. And I probably don't need to say exactly what happened, but I will say it anyways, just for somebody who might be confused for some odd reason. Obviously, the movie got delayed due to the pandemic of the COVID nineteen virus. And look, it was delayed from May to November of last year and I think all of us at that time we're like, what, Iver like to wait a few more months, but at least the pandemic will be over by November, right. Well, that didn't happen, because I got delayed from November to May of the next year, and then May this year it was delayed again a couple of months until July. But finally, finally, finally, finally, things are starting to turn around. Movie theaters are opening up again and this movie is finally coming out. It feels still kind of weird to me, like I just don't quite believe the movie exists until I'll go and see it, which is literally tomorrow night. But because of all these delays, the toy releases for this movie got really screwed up, because the Lego set for this film got released in March of two thousand and twenty, literally just a couple of weeks before this whole pandemic really kicked in to high gear. Very poor timing, and all the FUNKO POPs, action figures, accessories, all of that stuff the same kind of release dates. These toys have been sitting on shelves for well over a year and look, I don't know the official like sales numbers of Lego sets or other toys, but I cannot imagine that they have sold particularly well because, look, when the movie hasn't come out, most kids probably aren't going to go and buy a black widow Lego set or Funko pop or something of that sort with not having actually seen the movie. So I can't imagine that the products from this film have sold particularly well. Now, luckily for Lego, they didn't really push this movie all that much, which it's kind of unlucky for us because we only got the one set, and it feels weird to me that this movie only got one set, because Shang Chi, coming out in a couple of months, got to set, the eternals, coming out in November later this year, got four sets. But black widow, and already established marvel character and proven to be popular, is only getting one set. But they also release an additional set at comic con last year, but this set actually got sold to the public instead of being a con exclusive because, well, obviously, again due to the covid nineteen pandemic, comic con last year was completely canceled. So it's at a song of these sets at the convention. Legos sold them on shop at home and I was actually able to get this set and I had the other...

...set. So I have both of these black widows sets and without further ado, let's jump in and actually talk about the sets themselves. Finally, the first of our two black widow sets is the wide release set from this small collection and that is known as black widows helicopter chase. This was a thirty dollar set that has two hundred and seventy one pieces. As for the mini figures included with this set, well, obviously the first figure here the titular character herself, that is Natasha Romanov, Aka black widow, of course, portrayed by scarlet Johnson and the film's and while Lego has made a lot of black widow minifigures throughout the past decade or so, this is actually a completely exclusive variant of the character just to this set, and she looks very similar to versions we've gotten from the past and she is wearing her typical kind of black jumpsuit, but it is still an exclusive print for this character. And she has a really nice belt print. Her utility belt in gold with the iconic black widow logo is printed on her torso and I think it's an exceptional looking print and has some really nice kind of gold metallic details. That looks very nice. Her face piece is fairly generic, but I think it works out okay, and her hair piece is also really generic. It's the ginger kind of side sweat female hairpiece and it's not like horribly inaccurate. I just think they could do a little bit better and I wish they would give her a slightly more accurate and interesting looking hair piece for the titular character of this set. Finally, she of course has some accessories which are, to quote unquote, batons, which are literally just transparent light blue lightsaber blade pieces. Those look horrible and are kind of a pathetic excuse for a black widow accessory. I think the Harry Potter Wan piece which they have used at the batons and other sets, works much better for this character. Now moving on to a couple of other characters who are new characters for the black widow film. The first one here is Yo Lena Belova, who is Florence Pews character in the movie. Brief Tangent, I am in love with Florence Pew. Florence, please respond to my instagram DM's I love you. I think we could truly be something special. Hit me up soon, Florence. As for this figure, it's a pretty basic looking figure. Her Torso print looks very similar to the torso print we got actually for black widow from the infinity war set. It's kind of an olive green vest for her, which is fairly accurate to the film, and she doves has some printed legs as well. Her face print is very generic and her hair piece is a very generic kind of blonde ponytail piece. They definitely could have done something better for the face of this character, but the rest of her printing looks pretty good, but comparing her to the actual character, I don't really think it resembles Florence Pew at all and overall, just a mediocre looking figure. The final figure in this set, the main villain of the film, is task master, and this has a very nice face print. This figures face print is really good. For some reason, he uses a hood piece, a typical like a hood piece, but it's the old Lego hood piece, which Lego, which two thousand and nineteen introduced a new hood piece that looks much better than this one. But for some reason, and this set in particular, they just gave us the old hood piece. No idea why. Very odd decision in my opinion. But his face print still looks really good, and so does his torso print. And no leg printing, which is a very common thing, unfortunately for Lego Marvel superheroes characters. He also has some weapon accessories, which makes lots of since for the task master character. However, his weapons are extremely boring and very generic. He literally gets a giant spike piece as a sword and this weird like glove thing. I don't really know what to say...

...but these weapons, but they're absolutely trash. Not. Moving on to the builds of the set itself, first off, this has a couple of side builds. You get a motorcycle for black widow here, which is a simple dark blue motorcycle piece they've been using for a little bit over half a decade now, and it also has some black widow specific stickers on the side which look pretty neat, but there's nothing really to write hum about there. You also get a wheeled vehicle thing for task Masker to ride on, and it has like literally less than fifteen pieces. It's absolutely tiny and honestly this thing is an absolute joke of a build if you ask me. It looks hilariously bad now. It does interact with the next build, which I guess is a slightly redeeming factor about it, but besides that it's a complete waste. As for the main build of this set, you get a helicopter. Now, Lego has made tons of helicopters in the past, some for Marvel, a lot for Lego city and other themes. They're kind of obsessed with helicopters, and this one in particular is a Chinook style helicopter, which has been a staple of Lego city for many years now, and this is very similar to some of those other builds but definitely has a slightly more realistic color scheme than were used to for Lego. It's made in black and gray and honestly, it looks pretty solid from the exterior. It is not an extremely complicated design and it does use one of those big, very specialized cockpit pieces for its windscreen, but you know what, I think it's fairly nice to look at and looks like an actual helicopter you might see in a marvel foam. So kudos to Lego for doing something that cool. As for the exterior details, that as a black color scheme, it has kind of a transparent blue window. The bottom half is a mix of dark and light grays. There are storage on the outside for some weapons and, of course, some additional stud shooters on the outside as well for at a playability functions and some spinning landing gear on the bottom of the helicopter and of course, at the top of the helicopter. This thing is equipped with two different rotors and there's a really interesting part use. They actually use the collectible mini figure series eighteen present box piece where the rotor axle blade kind of goes inside of it. Hard to explain, not really sure why that is, but it actually looks pretty good, makes for an interesting building technique and functions fairly well. And there are some stickers on that piece and a few more stickers on the exterior of this helicopter to give it some added detail and I think it works out pretty nicely. Now, as for these rotors, they have the kind of grooved cylinder piece on the top which makes them very easy to spin around, which is great for a playability. Yes, those pieces kind of stick out a little bit on the top, but I think it's worth it for making them very easy to spin and making this thing really good for a playability. And it's a good size and easy to swooge, so overall the playability is very good. And in addition, that absolutely terrible small four wheeler build can actually go up in the back of this helicopter on a small ramp that folds down and while I hate that vehicle, it's still a pretty fun play feature and I always do love when a smaller vehicle can come out of a bigger vehicle. It's always been a very fun and fastening playability function in any Lego set, in my opinion. As for the rest of the interior of this helicopter, the cockpit has a seat with some sticker control panels and a couple of joysticks and you can put task master inside there, and that is it. There is a hallway in the middle of this thing that is completely empty. This seems like a humongous waste of potential. There was so much room they could have easily put some storage crates or something inside there, but Nope,...

...you get pretty much nothing. It's almost entirely empty and bland. Definitely Lazy on Legos Part, and I'm not a big fan of that. So all, this thing looks great from the outside and it has great functions. They definitely still kind of missed the mark with some of the interior details, but overall I think this set was a pretty good value for thirty dollars and I think compared to some other marvel sets that came out around the time, especially the ones based off movies, this set overall, in my opinion, is a fairly solid win, and y'all think so as well, because this was voted the best black widows set. Now I understand why, because the other set really isn't all that great and is very hard to get. There weren't a lot of options for you, but this one was voted as the best black widow set shifting gears. We have one other black widow set a talk about and that is the task master Am Bush set. This was a forty dollar set with two hundred and thirty pieces. Yes, that is an absolutely horrible price to part ratio, but a lot of the time these kind of comic con exclusive sets tend to have not super great values because Lego knows they can get a lot of money out of people for these con exclusive sets. And speaking of like I already said earlier, comic con was canceled, which led Lego to releasing this set online on shop at home, and luckily I was able to order one, but I know a lot of people were not able to order one and it's sold out pretty quickly and is now pretty much doubled in value online. I still haven't built this set. I've kind of been holding out to see how much it would go up in price, but I think for the sake of some instagram post, I'm probably going to open it just so I can have the exclusive minifigures here to make some fun post with those said figures. And speaking of those figures, the first one again, of course, is the titular character of black widow in a completely exclusive outfit. This is black widow in her white jumps to it, which she will be doming in the film, and it's a great looking figure. Same face print, same lousy batons, but the torso and like printing are completely exclusive and they look really good and more striking and unique than the black suit. And it's kind of odd to me that this more desirable version of the character comes in this common, con exclusive set that not that many people will get, and I can see why people might be kind of ticked off that this set is so hard to get with such desirable characters. Now, obviously black widow, the character, has come in other sets. A character that has not come any sets before and probably won't ever since, is Red Guardian, played by David Harper in the film. He is only in this set, a completely explosive figure and character. Now they do reuse the hopper headpiece, which obviously hopper is also played by David Harbor from stranger things. They re use his head piece for this character, which isn't entirely accurate because his beard is much longer in black widow than it is in stranger things, but I get why Lego was a little bit lazy there. So you can actually actually own his head piece in real life. But his torso print is completely exclusive here and it looks very good. I just wish they might have included a helmet here, but they did not. He also comes with a shield piece here, which is not a printed piece, so nothing really exclusive, but it does have a nice little decal on it as well. As the final mini figure of this set, here we get taskmaster once again, who was almost the exact same as the one from the last set, except he has no hood here. So nothing really a talk about with this task master figure, besides the fact that he has slightly better weapons and the last set. He gets a Muchet a piece here, which I think as a little bit more unique than one of those like teeth spike pieces, but still nothing crazy to talk about. As for the build of this set, it is...

...a six wheeled off road tank vehicle thing. This build is very similar to a two thousand and fourteen marble superheroes comic set called Captain America Versus Hydra and that set it was an eight wheeled vehicle. Just kind of imagine that set two of the wheels. As for the color scheme here, it's similar to task masters Color Scheme, so it's mostly black with accents of gray, dark blue and orange, and honestly I think the colors here look pretty good. But as for the vehicle itself, it feels pretty plain to me. There is space or like a single figure to sit. There's a storage crate at the back that has some nice prints on it but just holds some weapons, and there's some clips for weapons at the back as well, including another shield piece for task matter this time. But again, like the Red Guardian Shield piece, this one is not a printed piece by any means and that is really it for like the interior kind of ish details. All. This is a convertible style vehicle. It does have some cool side mirrors that actually use the paint roller piece. I actually like that as well, and it has some interesting playability functions. Like that Captain America Hyder set, it does kind of have some built in suspension so you can go over kind of rough terrain, which gives it some good playability, but this also is a collector set and it comes with a display stand with some terrainso can go over. So kind of weird that kind of put a playability function into a small set like this and overall not a great set. It's an awful deal for forty dollars. I can see why people are mad at this set's limited release. I'm very thankful I was able to get it and those twos of figures are really desirable, but overall definitely not a super interesting set, and that is it, only two sets from black widow. Definitely a letdown. I wish Lego made more, but oh well, what can you do? And thank you so much for listening. Hopefully we'll get some more stuff from this movie in the future, because we are missing some characters and versions of those characters, and hopefully, for brick ollogie's sake, I can do more marvel episodes and the future, and there's more episodes in general. I promise there will be more content coming out. It might be inconsistent from here on out and I'm sorry about that, but brick ology will stay afloat and there are some fun episodes planned for the near future. Thank you, so much for listening. Have a fantastic rest of your day, week, month, year, whatever it is. I hope you have an amazing rest of your day. I hope you could go see black widow and enjoy the film piece out God bless, but by.
