LEGO Time Cruisers

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

LegoLee329 travels back in time to learn more about the history of the mysterious LEGO Time Cruisers theme.

Good morning, teafternoon good eveningwhenever, wherever you are listening, thank you so much micking me, apart ofyour day, my name is Leparty, might know me as Legoli or Legol three tonine from fate. ANCERGRAM titer, you two patron name, I'm all over theInternet, and this is the Bricology potcast, the study of small plasticbricks. How are you doing today? I sincerely hope you are having afantastic day and n even better week and when I say that I really made itbecause the world isn't in a crazy place right now, I've been struggling alot and I think a lot of people have really been struggling and it justfeels like we're kind of hitting rock bottom as a world as a planet, an total, and I really hope that you guys are being able to stay positive during thisincreasingly dark time, and I hope that Bricology, even though it's a casualfun legopod cast. I hope that thies pot cast can help spark some joy in you ayou, learn something and you enjoy listening to this pod cast and IAVEbeen getting so much feedback as of late emails. Direct messages comments, you name it. You guys are really supporting at this Po cast and that'swhat keeps me going, I'm over seventy five hundred streams and we've finallyhit one hundred followers on Spotifi. Now I still think that follow account tseems really skewed like if I have seventy five hundred people listening, but only one hundred people following the mean come on. If you listen to thispot cast, if you listen to his potcast motile times, just follow me onspmotfight you'll get up to en a UPLA new episodes, and it really helps meout so find me on spotify and before we get started, I have to throw in theshameless plugs from my other various accounts. You can follow me onAnstegram, I literally post daily content on instrogram. I have likeeleven thousand some odd followers over there check me out an insregram. I alsohave a faxo page you can like you can follow me on my toiter account. You cansubscribe to my utubed channel and if you really love me, if you really lovethe pot cast, you love Legolee. U Love Brick Ology! You can maybe support me,I'm Patrion. I have a pretty underwhelming amount of patrioonsupporters. I have a decent bit, but I make very little money and littet likeone dollar liteally one dollar a month will go a very long way, helpingsupport this pod cat and supporting what I'd do so. That would be ahumongous help if you coet Sogo support me on Patrion, but now it's time to getinto today's episode of Bircology, not too many announcements. For today Ijust needdto to kind of clarify what I talked about a little bit last week. Solast week's episode of Brechology was my second consecutive episode ofBricology. That was about a licensed Lego theme and if you're a fan of thepotcast, you would know, but if you are O first time, lestener I'll explainthis real briefly. I had been alternating doing weeks where I did alicense theme like Lego, Star Wars and then next week would be an onlicensethem like Legoinjago. The first episode of season three a couple of weeks agowas about Solo, a star war story, and then I immediately did a Lego, supermarrio episode. ECAUSE I want to get that episode out as quickly aspossible, as I did two straight license theme episodes that is not going to bethe new norm, AL precology. I want to get that pattern back up in running soto make up for doing two license themes. The next two episodes, including todays, will be unlicensed themes, so this week is an unlicense theme. Next week willbe an onlicense them and then episode. Five of this season will be alicensting and the pattern will continue from there and it should becontinuing in that way for the forseaable future. So those are all theannouncements of today's episode out of the way lent t jump into this week'sthing. So this week we ware traveling back in time twenty four years to thepast, to talk about the Lego theme known as Lego Time. Cruisers now, ifyou're a fairly new tan of Lego or a younger fan of Lego, you might be likeLee what the heck is. LEGOTIME cruisers-...

...and I honestly I don't blame you ifyou're unfamiliar with this theme, this is the One and only legotheme thatfocuses on time travel and, of course this is an onlicense original inhouseleg of theme. They have made stuff from enders in Gan back to the future doctorwho that deal with time travel, but this is the only original legothemeever as this kind of Dumic for a storyline and speaking of time travel. This is one of the oldest things we've ever covered here on brickology, technically, the oldest thing we did was pirated it towards the end ofseason, one pirates sarte in n nineteen nd, eighty nine, but this is number twobecause this theme first came out n nineteen. Ninety six, which is beforemy time I was born n nine Huteen, an ninety seven. So this theme is olderthan me and there's actually some weird back story of how this time cruiserstheme came to be so lel explain, Thaut, here, right now, the year is nineteen.Ninety four two years were, the theme is actually offishy released and a Legofan built a model of a car that was also a time machine kind of similar tothe Dolorian from back to the future, but a little bit more on the Wacky sideof things and sent it to Lek a magazine and Lego loved the concept of this carthat they literally took that and developed a story with originalcharacters around that and those characters became the time. CruisersComic and the Lega magazine in the mid nineteen nineties for those of Yo whogrew up with like Liko Club magazine. I don't even know if they'd do thatanymore. My subscription ended years ago, at least, but I used to reallylook forward to getting these magazines when I was a kid and they always hadvarious comcon sorts so time crisal was originally a comic Strip and the leg ofmagazine in midnineteen nineties and the theme kind of spun off from thatcomic a couple of years later. But it's super interesting that this theme firststarted off as a COMOC strick and then became a Lego theme. That's very odd isL. I haven't really heard of on brioge before usually it's the other wayaround, but this one, that's how that started, and this is also the firstever Lego theme to have specifically named characters. I've mentioned it's acouple of times on bricology with other things like adventurers and Rock RadersHil. Those are some of the earlier themes. Do have name characters, butthis is the first lego theme that has specifically named characters which issuper interesting and what is the plot of time cruiters? You may ask well, let's Jup into that right now, so the following plot description, I've foundon bikpas is, is comes from the Lik o catalog an also was on Lego dtcom backin the day, and it reads as such. The LEGO Time cruiser sets will give you achance to travel through time any time. Imagine navigating your vehicle to thedeaths of time, posing other places passe and present to complete your topsucret mission. Careful though, as you never know who, or what you'll meetmost importantly emember to get back home or you could be trapped in timeforever. So that's a little fun description of time. Cruisers and thevery interesting thing here is time. Cruisers is actually divided into twodifferent factions. You have the good guys and the bad guys. The good guysare called the time cruisers and here's a description of them. The time crusersare the protagonists of the theme. A D Wer introduced, it's initial RELEATSE,nineteen ND, ninety six doctor cyber and his assistant, Timmy or the maincharacters in this faction and they visit other ages together knowledge andrepaired damage rought by the time twisters, which appeared the followingyear. ONL talk about them here, just a second. They also have other members, arobot named Cranky and a monkey named Ingo. Their primary objective is toremain undercover and metle as little as possible with history. So those arethe main time. Cruisers and obviously you know, dor cyberin timmy areprobably a rift on DOC, Brown and Marty mcfly from back to the future, but Legokindof made their own versions of those...

...characters. Speaking of the bad guys,we have the time twisters the description of time. Twisters is this. The antagonets of this theeme are called the time twisters the timetwisters our twins, Tony Twister, and professor millenium, who areaccompanied by the mysterious ghost and a skeleton that vehicles are powered bycylinders, filled with valuable artifacts from the past. They travel,Thoug, Tina, still objects of value to add to their cylinders and interferewith the past, so very interesting. Little descriptions here of the variousstory, lines and characters throughout the time cruisers sush time, twisterslying. They won't talk more about the differences, an those names witcomingrelating to the sets here in just a second but B fortheir do let's actuallytalk about the set from this thene. So, as I mentioned earlier, this themebegan in Nineteen Ninety six and there was an additional wave in the year. MyBirth Nineteen, ninety seven and the ways were actually divided up andmarketed as two different themes and any six you had the time. Cruisers setsfor the good guys in e ninety seven, you had the time twister set for thebad guys and they had a different logo and everything. And if you weren't, youknow the wiser to this. You think it actually were two different thingswhich is kind of interesting, and I can't really think of Leo do anthinganything quite like itfor. It kind of reminds me, though, of like Li obyanicle back in the day where they r release the Toa and then the bad guysin a separate waves. They have like Hiwav of six TOA and in the summer Yomit have a wave of six bad guys yous. Do that a lot with likeabionicle, whichwas kind of interesting? That's kind of the closest thing I can think of fromLego standpoint of completely dividing and secegating sets down the middlebetween the Protacaus and the antagonist with a full year in betweenn their release. But fortheir do AU start talking, abot the nineteen n intysix sets for the time cruisers. So the first time cruzers sat we'll talk abouthere is called the rocket racer. This set retail for four dollars and fiftycents not rounded up or anything. That was the actual price of this said ithad fifty eight pieces, the figure included. What they sat here is Timmy.Of course, one of the mancharacters of this line and the Bild was theaformentioned rocket racer, which was a trike style vehicle that had threewheels and it had two jet engines on the side and the back section hadanother big engine with flame shooting ut the back, and it had a couple ofsmall corumqute propellers on the top of twre, actually like the boat, propellers, O very small little propellers, and that all probably madeno sense to you and if you're listening to the Audio version of this potcast-and you don't know what these sets actually look like in real life, Iwould seriously suggest going on either brick set google or Bricopedia andlooking up these sets, because all the bills in the series really don't makeany sense. They're complete, hodge, podgu US random stuff from completelydifferent ereas, which I guess kind of makes sense. ECAUSE it's time cruisers, but it also is just incredibly wacky it literally just it doesn't make sense. So it's all pretty much crazy and I just ask you guys to roll with thecraziness of this theme. So that's a very small set getting to some of thebigger sets, the twenty two dollar for stuff. The prices for this theme areall over the place and they're super weird and specific numbers. It's veryodd. You know I've seen. Fifteen dollar Lei sets I've seen twenty dollars. LiGosets I've seen twenty five dollar Lego sets twenty two dollars like thatis so, oddly specific, I don't know why this set cost twenty two bucks. I don'tknow why the last set costs four dollars and fifty cents and Ocus Eithey, four or five dollars. It's very weird, and it almost seems like legojustforgot to round numbers with the prices of these sets, but the twenty dollarsset with one hundred and fifty seven pieces here is referred to as the Hipnocruiser this Tan included, Timmy Dcor, CIBER and Yasaga Ingo. The monkey andthe build of this set was a time traveling car which imin go ahead andguess was kind of an inspiration from that original car that had mentionedearlier on in this episode, and this colar has almost a hot rad type. Youknow appearance to the front with an...

...exposed engine and at the back is wherethings get out of control. There's a couple of seats in the cockpit IFITfigures, you big propeller in the middle and there's some dragonwings atthe back, and they also have space to store all these various head dresshelpein accessories. Now the importance of those is the various accessories like anight's hat or an injune mask or something the reason they have all ofthese and these setes, because whatever hat you use, is actually what powersthe time machine to take you back to that specific time. So that's a weirdlittle fun detail of Howbey. You know time travel in at this universe. Thisis a pretty cool set as a very unique look to it, but it is suitably wacky. The next Tet from tiss line here is the flying time. Vessel this set is fortyfour dollars again so weird. Why wasn't it just forty five? I just don'tunderstand the price points for these sets. This set had two hundred andthirty seven pieces, and the figures were the exact thing, literally. Thesame figures as the last set, which is pretty boring, and the build of thisset here is a flying boat that has a dragonhead at the front and some dragonwings towards the back that it has like plain style wings in the middle, but itlooks like a boat at has a boat hole, an a very modern style, boat, cockpitkind of Simmilar to like the shrimpboat style of cockpit, we saw from thehidden side set last year kind of that sort of boat boat. Cockpits ithingyou'd see any Lego city sets, but it also has a big pirate's mast in themiddle, like it's a pirate ship. This is so bizarre and so out there it'slike a hog podges of different kinds of boats throughout history plus anaerplane, and it has wheels that it can land on. I mean this thing makesabsolutely no sense and, like again, like I said, if you're just listeningto the audio version, this pot cast. Look this? U, because I don't know ifmy words are going to accurately explain how ludicrous this design isand, interestingly enough, this set was voted on by my fans on Instogram as thebest time cruisers set. Now, when I say I set is voted on, I literally meanthat I posty stick her on my anstegram story before the Episobefi Ri thiscriptfor the episode. I ask what is the best set from this theme and normally I getdozens of responses. However, Time crusers is a pretty obscure theme, Ithink a lot of you guys are just unfamiliar with time. Cruisers ingeneral, I literally got only five responses. One of the responses wasBlak. One response said Time cruiser sucks. One response said what is timecrusers and the other two responses reference to this set so kind of by tofaull, because it's the only so that actually got specific mentions this oneone, the best time cruser set it's not my personal favorite time. CAJURE TDactually think my vavorite set from this whole theme, Isnat e time, twister's wave e ell talk about that later on today's episode of Bricology, but kind of funny that this set did win, even though I'm not really sure thathad you know, earned that victory now the biggest set from the time crusersline in ineteen. Ninety six was the sixty four dollar again, which is thelack price points here. The five hundred and four pice sixty four dollarmagic mountain time set. It's the only place set from this line. The figuresin this set here the same ones that came to last set plus you get thatrobot Guid mutione earlier in the theme, so Yeah Pretty Boring, figure selection. They really didn't mix up the characters or anything, and it's verystrange to me that, because of the divide between the protacanusts and theantagonist, getting just completely separate waves of sets here that, ifyou got one of these sets a ninety six and the time, twister sets weren't evenout yet like what do you do like? How do you play with them? You have nothingfor them to fight so that I think was...

...kind of a weird missed opportunity onLego's part I mean like when they make a set for like a new action thing likeinjago or monkey kid, for example, usually they throw in bad guys in thegood guy sets or good guys in the Bagguy set. So you have something tofight, but these sets have absolutely none of that now. This is the biggestset from the entire theme. I believe it's the only place set from the entiretheme as well AIS, divided into a few separate sections. One section is avery medieval looking building. It looks very somla the things from Ligocastle throughout the Nineteen Ninetis, even the nineteen eighties, and it hasa large turret on the top that I'm not sure if this turret suposed to be likea laser Kan or maybe just like a big light, it could just be like alighthouse style light. The Middle Section here has a flying house thatcan be detached because you know why not and the background has a veryislandy sort of thing, which I believed onhe. Six was also the same year thatthe pirate subthimg for islanders came out so like it was really on thisisland kick in the mid nineties, and this had a lot of big ugly rock pieces, making ut kind of a mountainish landscape, and you had a palm tree aswell. And finally, the final section here had a very underwater base typefeel similar to things like aklazone from Lego in the nineties and had thesebig, transparent orange pieces, and it had some like underwater gear and stuffso very different things, but a pretty cool place et in a pretty cool, bigflagship, even though it was tecnically a base set for this time, cruisers teeforin time a year to the year N ninetee. Ninety seven I am now alive and thefollow up a line to Time Cruiser's time twisters that sets for the antagonistsof this theme are starting to come out in the first set from this line is theten dollar? Yes, a ten dollar set a completely normal Lego prize witheighty one pieces. This is the time tunnel later very interesting word andthe figure included with this set here is the arch nymesis of the timecruisers or one of the archenemissises of the time cruisers Yvtony Twista. Now,when I hear the name tol me Twista, I feel the knee to say that name with avery horrible like mobster, New York, Italian style, accent and tits marksthe second episode of Bricology in a road that I am doing, a horribleimpression of an Italian style accent. Hopefully that is not a recurring thingon this podcast, but the build for this set here was a flying vehicle at had acouple of wheels at the front, and it s very. You know it felt very inspired bythe fright nights theme, which was a castle sub theme from the nineties-that I'll probably do an episode of about onbricology at some point in thefuture. It had these vinyl pieces for these wings. It looked kind of like abig bicycle like an old style plane, but had like these kind of bat wingaesthetic, and you could push this vehicle on the ground. The wheels wouldspin and there was his gear mechanism tererbands. I would also make thepropeller at the front spin and make the wings flap up and down. This is theonly set from this entire line that I personally own myself. I don't rememberwhy I purchased this set, but I definitely like randomly ordered to setoff bricklink like ten years ago or something 'cause. I thought it lookedcoold and I just ended up buying it. UPBRICK Lick, remember it being a very, very fun set when I was younger and I still wish I had it built this day- andyou know what after you know when I'm edding this episode I'll, probably endup going on Ebay and bricklike, looking at some Lego time, cuzers tets forsales 'cause, I would definitely love to have a couple more of these in mycollection. Next from the time twisters line for twenty two dollars back to theweird price points, another twenty two dollars set with one hundred and fortyseven pieces is the whirling time warper this that includes professormillennium and Ghost Very Cretive name for the ghost his name is ghost. Ireally love that name, and this is a flying vehicle that has a bubblestylecockpit at the front. There's a couple of bugle horns: offof the side thatthat was kind of an interesting little...

...touch of for Lego to include there andthe back has thes cylinder, which is what powers their time travel withvarious artifacts in the side of it and the vehicle can roll on the ground andsimilar t to last one. When you roll on the ground, it activates a very uniqueplay, peture with gears and little shifts, and things like that. Sobasically, what this one did is when Yeu roll it on the ground. It had theselike kind of pipe cone designs or these skeleton heads wearing top pats wouldgo up and down very fun kind of like Wackamol Ish design. It would also spinaround the cylinder and Spinn a propeller that was at the back of thevehicle so yen, again a really cool geared mechanism for this particularset, and now we have the biggest set from the time twisters line with thepricepoint of thirty eight dollars and fifty cents. That's the winner, that isthe weirdest price point I have ever seen on a legoset. Why was this notjust forty bucks like seriously, I honestly wish it cost more, so theprice point made more sense. Thirty, eight fifty is so utterly bizarre. Ijust do not understand that prize point whatsoever. The figures included withthis set were Tomy Twista, professor millennium, ghost and Yuasa got theexclusive wizard skeleton, which is kind of e fun little character. It wasliterally just a skeleton piece with a beard and a wizards hat, and the billfor this set is a flying train with three cars, this flying strain. Ifyou're familiar with the monster fighters line, an which I will be doingan episode of that around Halloween time, so look forward to that, but ifyou're familiar with the monster fighters lie the ghost traind from that,I think is kind of like a remake of this a this is kind of like theoriginal ghost train to me. So it had this flying train with three cars. Nowthe train was flying, but you could also still put it on ant. Normal Lego, train check, systimio would function in that regard as well, if you so showsechoose do that. So, of course, you had the engine of the train, which had acouple of seats in the cockpit to be piloted and had a really big, like acomically oversized smokestack with flames flying out the top, I'm prettysure if the SMOKESTACK, if your train has flames coming out of it, youprobably need to get that checked out 'cause. I don't think trains aresupposed to do that, but it's Li fond little detailit lik go included here.He also had the next car, which is referred to Embicopedia as theobservation car, which again is very fright, nights inspired. In fact it wasactually so frighteced inspired that it literally included the Frightd NightsShield, which I think is pretty interesting. I love it when Lego. Doesthese weird, like inner connectivity things between things, I really doenjoy little like Easter eggs of that sort, and this one was it had kind oflike a Western looking balcony section ahead. An of those like you know, I'mtalking about the Lego, brick. That kindo looks like the weird bread stick, that compet checks mix, Tho, guys o what I'm talking about. It's like at,like four little sections and it kind of looks like wood or Lincoln log styleof texture. It had that kind of texture and there's a balcony towards the backand there's also a tower that spins around on top when the train wheels arerolling, so fun little gear mechanism as well. And finally, the back car ofthis train is referred to as the GOST car. Again very fright, nights inspiredand this one is just very castle inspired as well, because the wholething kind of looks like a castle turret and its has. You know like thecastle, roof kind of design, and it's completely black. So that's wort, thefrightnights inspiration kind, O comes from there's, also an elevated platformin the back where a character can sit, and that is it Ya. This is one been oneof these shorter episodes of Bricology, there's not a ton to cover with thisthime, but that is it. I really Hepe. You learn something about time:cruisers slashtime twisters, this very obscure legotheme, very odd. To me howthese sets were completely divided between good and bad guys, and wouldyou guys like to see this sort of theme again like I said this is the one andonly original leg of theme that can attaps on the whole time travel thing, they' done so much other fantasy kind...

...of stuff in the past. I would love tosee Lego give a stab at this sort of thing. Again. It's a tropen, famouslythey haven't really touched sense and I would love to see a remake of sorts andkind of a reimagining with more modern legopieces. How this thing could lookin modern day Lego. So that's all guys! Thank you so much for listening.Today's episode of Bricology, like I mentioned at the beginning, the episodeto find me online. If you have any questions for me, shoot me an email, legole, three to nine Gmail dotcom. I try to apply to any emails. I get shootme an email on there or idon't want to email me. Fine, an N, Insterta facebook, twitter, whatever you to even you, can sut me a direct message as well. I tryto raply to everything that I get as long as it's a pretty normal question, and I remember next week well also be an unlicense seam and then the patternwill return after that. Thank you all so much for listening to day's episodesor brikology. I hope you had a great time, listening N to hope. You have afantastic rest of your day and week, piece out yell by Bye.
